Academic Excellence and Leadership Award

The AHETEMS Academic Excellence and Leadership Award is presented as a college scholarship to qualified Hispanic high school rising seniors (i.e. juniors moving into their senior year) who demonstrate strong academics, leadership experience, service, and interest in attending college and pursuing a degree in STEM. The $2,500 scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate significant motivation in pursuing both a college degree and a leadership position in a STEM field.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Hispanic descent
  • Rising Senior (i.e. High school junior entering their senior year)
  • Attend an accredited high school in the United States or Puerto Rico
  • Have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Have demonstrated leadership within or outside of school
  • Have demonstrated active service within the Hispanic community
  • Accepted into an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university in the United States or Puerto Rico in fall 2011
  • Attend the 2010 AHETEMS Pre-College Symposia in Cincinnati, OH, from October 28 – 31, 2010

NOMINATION

High school rising seniors must be nominated by their teacher, advisor, coach or school counselor. Nominations include 1) the Nomination Form, 2) Personal Statement, 3) Official Transcript and 4) Nomination Letter.

DEADLINE

Complete nominations must be RECEIVED (not postmarked) BY AUGUST 27, 2010.

AWARD NOTIFICATION

Students will be notified of their selection by September 2010 of their senior year. Students who receive this award are REQUIRED to attend the 2010 AHETEMS Pre-College Symposia to be held in Cincinnati, OH, from October 28 – 31, 2010. Travel, hotel, meals and registration will be provided.  Students will be presented with the award on Friday, October 29, 2010, at the AHETEMS Pre-College Symposia Academic Excellence Recognition Banquet.

Award recipients will receive the scholarship upon successfully enrolling in an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university in the United States or Puerto Rico, in fall 2011.
