Established in August 2003 as an independent 501(c)(3), the Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math and Science (AHETEMS) Foundation.(pronounced a-teams), in partnership with SHPE and other orgnizations, has been working exclusively to develop educational enrichment and academic outreach initiatives, for Latinos/as, that extend throughout the pre-college to PhD pathway.

Funding for AHETEMS initiatives is derived from various federal, state, local and private grants and private tax-deductible donations.

The AHETEMS Foundation is responsible for informing the public about technical careers, internships and educational opportunities; maintaining educational centers; and promoting the interest of students and professionals in educational and charitable pursuits.

The AHETEMS Foundation has acquired a broad-based consistency for educational enrichment, recruitment and retention programs throughout the country, but each university’s activities are unique and are supported by local SHPE chapters.  The AHETEMS educational programs are organized into three areas:

  • Pre-College Programs
  • Undergraduate Programs
  • Graduate Programs

Rafaela Schwan, M.S.
AHETEMS Director of Programs

As Director of Programs, Rafaela executes and manages the daily operations and financial development of the Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math, and Science (AHETEMS) Foundation.  In that position she has raised nearly $1M to operate over 20 programs and partnerships targetting Latino/a pre-college - PhD students.  She  authored and developed the policies and guidelines for the newly formed SHPE Jr. Chapters, designed the AHETEMS Scholarship Program and AHETEMS Internship Program, created the Pre-College Symposia, which is AHETEMS' conference, conceptualized the EduComic Book, spearheads the Ay Mija/Ay Mijo book series, and leads the IBM/SHPE/HENAAC Summer Camp partnership.

Previous to her current position, Rafaela was selected as one of the prestigious Fellows assigned to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Headquarters, Office of Equal Opportunity Programs.  She was responsible for conducting a study of the NASA undergraduate and graduate scholarship programs.  She attended and assisted with coordination of the agency’s educational outreach programs.

Prior to her assignment to NASA Headquarters she was responsible for the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) internship program.  She ensured that the program was a diverse internship program and that students were given consideration for additional educational or employment opportunities.  She coordinated LaRC student participation for the NASA Project, National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science (GEM), Entry Point and other underrepresented group programs.  She assisted with the planning and coordination of the Pre-Service Teacher Institute and Conference and the Small Disadvantage Business/University Opportunity Forum.  She also served as the liaison between LaRC Office of Education and Hampton University’s president and faculty.

Rafaela served 12 years in the United States Air Force.  She was a member of the United State Air Force Demonstration Squadron “Thunderbirds” and traveled across the United States, Latin American, and Canada.   She managed the application and selection process for the enlisted officers assigned to the squadron.  She coordinated interviews for the officer selection process with the squadron wing commander.  In her second year, she was assigned as the squadron resource advisor and managed and planned the squadron’s multi-million dollar budget.
