The AHETEMS Pre-College Symposia is a full day college and career awareness program for Hispanic middle and high school students. Two tracks — a High School Track and a Middle School Track — are held for approximately 1,000 students from the local community, out-of-state areas, and SHPE Jr. chapters. Each year the program is held at various universities throughout the United States in conjunction with the SHPE Conference. The program has been hosted by the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Science Center in Denver, CO, Villanova University in Pennsylvania, and through the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ.

Local high school students attend a one day event including a welcome session in the morning, workshops on college financial aid, SAT/ACT test prep, college choice, college admissions, and careers in science and engineering. In addition, students have the opportunity to meet with over 30 colleges, universities, and scholarship programs participating in the College Fair. Non-local students attend an additional day of workshops. Previous guest speakers have included renowned educator Jaime Escalante, NASA astronauts Dr. Daniel (Danny) Olivas and Jose M. Hernandez as well as motivational speaker Dr. Calvin Mackie.

Middle school students (i.e. 6th to 8th grade students) attend a one-day program complete with hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering and math. These entertaining and challenging activities are hosted by various corporate representatives and engineering college students.

Chaperone Information

AHETEMS requires there be one chaperone for every ten students who attend the event if they are non-local students and under the age of 18. Chaperones will be informed of all the requirements and duties prior to the event upon their registration. Chaperones are not required to pay a registration fee.

Transportation

Students and chaperones must schedule their own travel arrangements to and from the symposia event. In the past schools have arranged district busses to transport students as a field trip. Special bus transportation will be arranged by AHETEMS for students traveling from select cities. Please contact the AHETEMS Office or visit the Web site for further information on transportation.

Hotel Accommodations

Lodging will be provided at the Four Diamond Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza only for students and chaperones traveling from outside a 50-mile radius. Students are housed four students per room — four males or four females. Chaperones are housed two per room — two females or two males. Every attempt is made to house groups of students and chaperones from the same school together; however it will not be a certainty; please make sure students and adults are informed of this beforehand.

ADA Accommodations

If students require special accommodations for wheelchair access, or impaired hearing or vision, please indicate as such on the registration form and contact the AHETEMS office.

Registration Procedure:

  1. Schools MUST be registered before any students or chaperones can register.
  2. Non-Local students MUST attend the event with a chaperone.
  3. Students 18 and over and local students may attend the event without a chaperone (though AHETEMS still encourages these students to attend with chaperones). Local students can therefore register without a chaperone. The School of local students and students 18 and over MUST still be registered before a student can proceed with registration.
